MOQ negotiation basics for first-time importers

The minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest order a supplier says it will accept. It exists because setting up a production run costs money: moulds, colour changes, printing plates, material minimums. Understanding why an MOQ exists is the key to negotiating it.

What public quotes show (2026-W42, real data)

Median listed MOQ across about 30 public quotes per product in our 2026-W42 issue:

ProductMedian MOQ
Mini projector1 piece
LED face mask1 piece

Massage gun50 pieces
Weighted vest50 pieces
Camping lantern100 pieces
Magnetic power bank100 pieces
Resistance bands300 pieces

Insulated tumbler500 pieces
Reusable water bottle500 pieces
Electric spin scrubber1,000 pieces

Listed MOQs are a supplier's opening position for a standard item. Custom branding, colours or packaging usually raise them.

Levers that usually work

  • Pay more per unit for fewer units. Ask for a price ladder (for example 100 / 300 / 1,000) so you can see the trade-off.
  • Use the supplier's existing spec. Stock colours, stock packaging and a simple logo method (sticker, hang tag, laser) avoid new tooling.
  • Ask for a sample or trial order and say what volume follows if it sells. Be honest; suppliers talk to many first-time buyers.
  • Combine SKUs. Some suppliers count the MOQ across colours or sizes of one model.
  • Consider trading companies or stockists for very small first orders. They often accept lower quantities at a higher unit price.
  • Agree payment terms that fit a small order. A deposit with the balance after inspection and before shipment is common. Use payment methods with buyer protection where you can.

Before you pay anything

Marketplace badges such as "verified" or "audited" are claims made by the platform or a third party. ImportRadar does not verify suppliers. Check the business licence and export history, order samples, agree a written spec (materials, tolerances, packaging, labelling), and consider an independent pre-shipment inspection. Make sure the supplier can provide the compliance documents your market needs. See the certifications checklist.

Factor the MOQ into landed cost

Small orders spread fixed costs over fewer units. In the US, the Merchandise Processing Fee minimum is $34.58 per formal entry (FY2027), and sample testing or certification can cost more than the goods. Run the numbers per unit with our landed-cost guide.

FAQ

Is a supplier’s MOQ negotiable?
Often, yes. A listed MOQ usually reflects the supplier’s production setup. Paying a higher unit price, accepting stock colours or packaging, or ordering a sample run can lower it.

What MOQs are typical for small consumer products from China?
In our 2026-W42 sample of public Made-in-China.com listings, median MOQs ranged from 1 piece (mini projectors, LED face masks) to 1,000 pieces (electric spin scrubbers), with 100–500 pieces common.
